Trivia In late summer, 2004, band leader Stan Switala (vocals, acoustic guitar), began recruiting musicians in his home town of Fredericksburg, Virginia. First, he coerced his son Josh Switala (rhythm guitar, vocals). Josh used to play guitar and sing in the local rock band Tremor. Next, Stan convinced Young Devereaux (saxophone, vocals), that playing in a rock band would compromise neither his pursuit of higher education, nor his reputation as a music teacher. Scott Prince (lead guitar, keys) was a rock-climbing buddy of Stan's. When Stan asked him to join, Scott agreed, and the band became instantly rather eccentric. Scott brought in Kelly Joyner (drums, vocals), the lone out-of-towner from Northern Virginia, with whom he had jammed for many years in his basement. After one informal gig (during which Josh and Scott shared bass guitar duties), Stan realized he had a BAND. They canvassed the Fredericksburg area for a full-time bassist. Enter Russ Kidd (bass, vocals), veteran of many blues and rock bands. Thus The Sunday Times became whole. Until... Early 2007 when, after two years of gigging and growing, the band lost Young and Russ to the mysterious forces that sometimes consume saxophonists and bass players. Enter Dean Sadler (bass), a soft-spoken metal enthusiast. And The Sunday Times became whole again. Until... Fall 2007, when the band lost Dean to North Carolina. Enter Larry Townley (bass) who brings 20+ years of musicianship and a range of talents. In addition to bass, he plays guitar, banjo, and piano. And The Sunday Times became whole again. Until... Summer 2008, when the band lost Scott and his subversive influence to a Buddhist monastery in Idaho. Enter Mike Smith (keyboards and vocals) with his eclectic influences and professional chops. ~ They cover a diverse range of songs, from Tom Petty, REM, and Jimmy Buffet, to Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Supertramp. They play some of the A-sides you might expect, but they also play the B-sides and the seldom heard gems. |
